Natural veneer is sliced from the log of a tree. Each veneer sheet (leaf) shows a unique pattern reflective of the species of the tree and the environment where it grew. For our doors we select veneer leafs from the same tree. You will see natural variations between individual sheets, allowing the veneer to showcase surface knots and other natural characteristics.
Engineered veneer is real wood, born from a natural core. It goes through a manufacturing process designed to alter some of the features of wood, resulting in veneers that reproduce nature's rich and beautiful grain patterns, but are more consistent in appearance and color. These engineered (reconstituted) veneers are generally free of surface knots but maintain the natural wood grain from the core species used.

Natural wood veneers on Dorsis frameless interior doors or trimless pocket doors are typically 0.6 mm (0.024") thick. For some projects, we use 0.9 mm or 1.5 mm wood veneers. These thicker wood veneers allow us to accentuate wood with wire brushing – a method of removing softer wood from the wood grain, enhancing the texture, and creating a lovely tactile finish.
An oil penetrates the wood veneer and soaks into the wood layer. A Dorsis frameless door with wood veneer finished with oil-based coating has a matte appearance and truly celebrates the wood grain.
A polyurethane coating is a super-tough finishing layer that sits on top of the wood veneer. A Dorsis frameless door with polyurethane coating can feature a variety of finishes, from satin to glossy.
Whitewash is a semi-opaque finish applied to bare wood veneer. A Dorsis frameless door in whitewash finish will have a matte appearance and a more uniform look.
Staining will change the color of wood veneer of the door to bring it into alignment with other colors and finishes in the house. Staining will often deemphasize some of the wood grain.
Pigment will change the color tone of the veneer. When a wood veneer Dorsis frameless door is integrated in a wood panel wall, pigmentation will unify the natural differences in the color of wood veneer.
