Most of us never think about it, but a humble door handle is something we engage with every day. For an industrial designer door handles present the challenge of elevating their simple function into something more, making even our shortest of interactions more pleasant, more enjoyable. The development of a truly innovative door handle design — from the shape and finishes to mechanical parts to manufacturing — takes an incredible amount of work and is not something that happens overnight.
We were thrilled when in February 2023 one of Angelbau's top architectural hardware suppliers, a Dutch manufacturer Formani, finally introduced their new RIVIO door handle collection. Known for their close collaborations with industrial designers, Formani took a slightly different route this time. The design of the RIVIO was perfected in close collaboration with the global architecture powerhouse Gensler, a first for the team at Formani.
The RIVIO hardware collection, which consists of door fittings, window fittings, furniture fittings, and other accessories, provides interior designers with an option to unify the space, regardless of where they are used - in a residential environment, office, or retail space.
This new collection is intentional in its pursuit of unique ergonomics. Transitioning from slender to solid, the flowing cutaway of the RIVIO handle allows the thumb and fingers to engage in a comfortable, natural way, affording a better grip that helps make opening and closing easier.
